In Old Slavic mythology, the linden was considered a sacred tree. Trees were the home of Lada, the goddess of love and beauty, and later the Mother of God. Icons were put on the branches to become miraculous. The Slavs revered the linden not only as a sacred tree, but also as a mother tree, giving everything they needed to their children. The tree was also used as a special amulet.
