Pachamama, or Mother Earth is the divine creator, protector and nurse. She patronizes all living things, she is responsible for fertility and the birth of healthy children. A holiday in her honor is celebrated on August 1. Peruvians hug and forgive each other's grievances, burn packages of offerings, perform rituals of gratitude to the earth, treating the goddess, and participate in lavish feasts. The Pachamama symbol provides protection, prosperity, and spiritual renewal.
