The thistle is the national symbol of Scotland. According to legend, the plant with its thorns saved the warriors from the attack of enemies. In the Slavic tradition, the thistle is one of the strongest amulets against evil. Interestingly, on the canvases of the Renaissance, the plant enhanced the qualities of male characters or even depicted instead of people absent in the picture. Later, the image of a thorny plant paired with a snow-white lily was a sign of purity and exclusivity.
