Several centuries ago, tulips were brought to Amsterdam from the Ottoman Empire and were received by the Dutch with such enthusiasm that now this flower is the national emblem of the Netherlands. The flower was a rare, exclusive plant in Europe, therefore it symbolized wealth, prosperity, and luxury. Flowers were bred at the courts of rulers. This spoke of the high status and nobility of the monarchs.
